Missionaries: An overview
A brand new land is discovered and overnight the largest religion and the world is gunning towards it hoping to meet these new people and convert them to Christianity. They send small groups of priests to go to these native towns and teach the indigenous people their religion. These people are called missionaries and all over the New World they set up their schools called missions. They set up schools, hospitals and churches anywhere there is a town. They have only a few requirements for the indigenous people. They must be converted to Christianity and practice Christianity within their communities. Right away a struggle forms, a battle between the indigenous people and this new religion that is brought by people from across the ocean. The warriors are missionaries on the Christian side and priests and traditions on the indigenous side.
After hundreds of years the missionaries prevail almost every person in the New World is a Christian. If the people refused to convert they were killed. Nothing would stop these missionaries; they would eventually reach their goal of Christianity’s complete domination of the New World.
However, the missionaries were not just ruthless people who refused to accept a new religion. They built schools to educate the natives in the arts of reading and writing; they built hospitals to cure the natives of the diseases they brought with them from Europe. All these bonus came with only one hitch and that was to use these services one must be Christian. The benefit of all these services caused the missionaries to be successful and eventually convert most of the population of the new world
